Lossless

Today’s experiment is to test out the quality of Apple Lossless format. I am pretty over the way that MP3s (and AAC from the IMS) sound on my somewhat fancier audio gear. So I ripped a bunch of CDs into Lossless on the G5 at my house to see how things worked out.

Initial thoughts:

  1. Apple Lossless rips are fast. Like 45x.
  2. They sound great out of my little computer speakers
  3. They sound the same coming out of my stereo via Airtunes (I think I recall that they are reencoded on the fly before being sent to my Airport Express)
  4. Via the iPod, they sound pretty wicked on my Alpine in the car, but not as good as CDs (more tweaking on this later)
